Democrat and Chronicle:

A 79-year-old Webster homeowner died Sunday after he and his riding lawnmower plunged over a steep 30-foot bluff on the Lake Ontario shoreline.

The man, whose name was not released, was discovered at the bottom of the bluff by family members who returned home about 6 p.m. They had last seen the man in late afternoon as he cut the grass, said Webster Police Lt. Dennis Kohlmeier.
The incident occurred at 1040 Lake Road near Webster Park. The lawn that the homeowner was cutting runs right up next to the bluff, he said.

The cause of death and precise time of the incident were not immediately determined. Kohlmeier could not say if Sunday's stormy, wet weather was a factor. Two storm cells passed through the area, the second of which arrived about 5:45 p.m., according to National Weather Service radar images.

Emergency responders had difficulty reaching the man at the base of the bluff, and had to summon rappellers and marine units to help. Recovery of the man's body was expected to take until mid-evening Sunday, Kohlmeier said.
